The discovery of Fishbourne Roman Palace was a fortuitous accident. The find was initiated by a workman who discovered a piece of pottery in the process of laying down water mains in 1960. Experts from the British Museum were called in and soon one of the most exciting Roman excavations in England this century began to be unearthed.
An excavated Roman farmstead, Bignor Villa boasts the longest mosaic in England and some of the finest Roman mosaics to be seen anywhere.
